For GCSE and A Level students across the UK, exam season is finally over. You’ve done it! Now’s the perfect time to start celebrating the end of exam season. Whether you’re a student, parent, or guardian, we’re sure these past few months have tested your stress levels. But now, it’s time to celebrate and relax. But why exactly is this time so stressful, and how does it affect everyone involved?
The Stress of Exam Season
- For Students:
Exam season can be really tough. There’s so much information to learn, and the pressure to perform well can feel overwhelming. You might worry about meeting your own expectations and those of your parents and teachers. The fear of not doing well, combined with the stress of sitting in a silent exam hall for hours, can make anyone anxious. - For Parents and Guardians:
Parents and guardians feel the stress too. They want you to succeed and often share your worries. It can be hard for them to see you stressed, and they might feel unsure about how to help.
For many families, the exam period tests everyone’s patience and resilience. But now, the hardest part is over. It’s time to celebrate and take some well-deserved rest.
Self-Care Tips to Help You Relax and Have Fun
With exams behind you, it’s important to focus on taking care of yourself and having some fun. Here are some easy and enjoyable ways to relax:
1. Get Back to Your Hobbies
Remember those activities you enjoyed before exams took over? Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument, gardening, or cooking, now is the time to dive back in. Doing things you love can help you feel happy and relaxed.
2. Enjoy the Outdoors
Spending time outside can really lift your spirits. Go for a walk, have a picnic, or just sit in the park. Fresh air and a bit of sunshine can do wonders for your mood.
3. Spend Time with Friends and Family
Reconnect with the people you care about. Plan a get-together, watch a movie, or just hang out. Being with friends and family is a great way to get some extra support and can keep you distracted if you’re worried about results day.
4. Take Some Time to Chill
It’s okay to take a break so allow yourself some guilt-free rest and relaxation. Whether it’s binge-watching your favourite shows, having a home spa day, or reading a good book, give yourself permission to relax.
5. Try Something New
Experiment with a new activity or learn a new skill. It could be anything from trying out a new sport, learning to bake, or even picking up a new hobby. New experiences can be exciting and refreshing.
Dealing with Worries About Results
Even though exams are over, you might still be worried about your results. That’s totally normal. But there’s a way to handle those worries: the 3 Buckets of Control. This method helps you focus on what you can control and let go of what you can’t.
What are The 3 Buckets of Control?
Bucket 1: Things You Can Control
This bucket is for things you have direct control over. Ask yourself what you can do to manage your situation. For example, you can control how you take care of yourself, how you spend your time, and how you react to stress. Take steps to relax and stay positive.
Bucket 2: Things You Can Influence
This bucket is for things you can influence, even if you can’t control them completely. For example, you can’t change your exam results, but you can influence your future by exploring different education or career options. Gather information, ask for advice, and plan your next steps.
Bucket 3: Things You Need to Let Go Of
This bucket is for things that are out of your control and influence. This includes your exam results. Worrying about them won’t change the outcome and will only add stress. Accept that you’ve done your best and try to let go of some of the anxiety you may be feeling. Your self-worth is not defined by the grades you achieve.
Now’s the perfect time to start celebrating the end of exam season and congratulate yourself for all your hard work by taking a break. Remember to focus on self-care, be kind to yourself and treat yourself to something nice – you deserve it!
